Collecting Art
Standing in front of the right work of art, you can travel in time, feel genuinely connected, or walk away changed, sometimes all at once. You might not know the artist, the movement, or what the critics say, but you feel inspired, and you want more.
That thrilling moment can spark a lifetime of intellectual adventure, but following your inspiration can be hard. The art world is infinitely complex. Prices can be opaque. Access requires relationships that take years to build. There are a thousand artists worth knowing, countless ways to learn, and few people who can help you navigate the noise, even for experienced collectors.
That's what I'm here for.
Experience
I've worked in the art world for thirty years and I'm still fascinated by it.
For nine years, I ran a notable, vanguard gallery in downtown New York. The gallery's exhibitions were reviewed in Artforum, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Frieze, and I placed work in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Centre Pompidou, and other major museums. One of my gallery artists participated in the 2013 Venice Biennale exhibition curated by Massimiliano Gioni. I also spent eight years working for some of the best galleries in New York, including Andrea Rosen and Paula Cooper. I have worked with collectors at every level, from people just beginning to trust their eye to some of the most serious private collectors active today.
Thirty years' experience has given me access, relationships, and a finely calibrated sense of what will matter in twenty years versus what is merely of the moment. I specialize in finding undervalued artists before the market does. I can introduce you to anyone you'd want to meet. I can help you find that one impossible-to-find work. I have an exceptional eye for hanging art and making it sing in a room. I have a particular gift for understanding a client's taste and introducing them to new artists who fit their parameters perfectly. And I bring complete discretion to every client relationship. What you collect, what you pay, and what you’re considering stays between us.
Most importantly, I believe that art is a profound expression of humanity, not just an asset class or a status symbol, but a way of being alive. At the same time, I'm sensitive to the needs of serious collectors: deaccessioning, provenance, authentication, insurance, storage, tax implications, strategic positioning, estate planning, and collection legacy. I can help you buy smart. But I never want to lose sight of the reason why we're doing this.
