Collecting Art

Standing in front of the right work of art, you can travel in time, feel genuinely connected, and walk away changed, sometimes all at once. You might not know the artist, the movement, or what the critics say. You just feel inspired, and you want more.

That thrilling moment can spark a lifetime of intellectual adventure, but following that inspiration can be hard. The art world is infinitely complex. Prices can be opaque. Access requires relationships that take years to build. There are a thousand artists worth knowing, countless ways to learn, and few people who can help you navigate the noise, even for experienced collectors.

That's what I'm here for.

Experience

I've worked in the art world for thirty years and I'm still fascinated by it.

For nine years, I ran a notable, vanguard gallery in downtown New York. The gallery's exhibitions were reviewed in Artforum, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Frieze, and I placed work in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Centre Pompidou, and other major museums. One of my gallery artists participated in the 2013 Venice Biennale exhibition curated by Massimiliano Gioni. I also spent eight years working for some of the best galleries in New York, including Andrea Rosen and Paula Cooper. I have worked with collectors at every level, from people just beginning to trust their eye to some of the most serious private collectors active today.

Thirty years' experience has given me access, relationships, and a finely calibrated sense of what will matter in twenty years versus what is merely of the moment. I specialize in finding undervalued artists before the market does. I can introduce you to anyone you'd want to meet. I can help you find that one impossible-to-find work. I have an exceptional eye for hanging art and making it sing in a room. I have a particular gift for understanding a client's taste and introducing them to new artists who fit their parameters perfectly. And I bring complete discretion to every client relationship. What you collect, what you pay, and what you’re considering stays between us.

Most importantly, I believe that art is a profound expression of humanity, not just an asset class or a status symbol, but a way of being alive. At the same time, I'm sensitive to the needs of serious collectors: tax implications, deaccessioning, provenance, authentication, insurance, storage, estate planning, and collection legacy. I can help you buy smart. But I never want to lose sight of the reason why we're doing this.

Office Hours

Once a month, I set aside time for conversations with people who have questions about the art world. Where do I start? Is what I own any good? What should I actually look for at an art fair? Should I buy that Frank Bowling? (probably yes!) How do I sell an artwork or pare my collection? How do I obtain that one work I've been dreaming of? No agenda, no pitch. Just a conversation with someone with thirty years of experience who genuinely loves talking about art and the occasionally absurd world it inhabits.

Private Gallery and Fair Walks

The art world makes the most sense when you experience it with the right person. I take a small number of people through galleries and art fairs each season. If you’re interested, email me at lisa@lisa-cooley.com or book Office Hours.

Newsletter

Twice a month, I share a bit about how the art world actually works — the market, the history, the human stories, what I've seen, and the things nobody tells you when you are starting out. I write for people who are curious about collecting and want to pursue it with more confidence and joy.

work with me

The collectors who built the most meaningful collections rarely did it alone. They found someone they trusted, started a conversation, and followed their curiosity somewhere they could not have gone by themselves.

Your collection is out there. The works that will make your heart race, the artists who will become lifelong obsessions — they exist right now, and I can help you find them.

Although I grew up in Houston, Texas, I've lived in the psychogeography of downtown New York for decades. I delight in stories about the city's creative history, its music scenes, and the way this city makes everything — culture, connection, ideas — feel more alive and more possible. I love collecting records, Vaughn Oliver, film, literature, Arcana Books in LA, David Mancuso, all forms of dancing, running, astronomy, antiquity, bad sound effects, jumping high-tens, and growing things in my neglected garden. But mostly I love art. I have a memory for artists, works, prices, and art history that my clients find either impressive or uncanny, depending on the day.

I also host a podcast called Oko, where I talk about the art world with the people who actually run it — gallerists, collectors, critics, advisors, and artists. If you want to understand how this world works from the inside, start with Oko!
